200 Gr. or 230 Gr. for a .45?
Should I get 200 or 230 grain ammo for my .45? Specifically I am looking at Speer Gold Dot JHPs. They will be going into a Glock 30 SF. Thanks for the help!

Re: 200 Gr. or 230 Gr. for a .45?
I am a 1911 shooter for the last (almost) 30 years, I have foung that the 230 gr is best approach for self defense & just about everything else.
Reliability is the most important factor. If all I could use realiably was 230 fr ball, I would not feel undergunned. most fixed sight 1911 are regulated to fire 230 grainer to point of aim. they are also generally cheaper and easier to find. |

My personal preference for the Glock 30 with 3.78 inch barrel is Speer Gold Dot 200 +P...faster velocity to make up for a shorter barrel.

G30 is a nice little pistol. Get both varieties, practice a lot.
The Glock really doesnt care, it will digest plenty of either weight bullet and make nice little 7/16" holes, right where you point it. The terminal ballistics are............. both terminal Personally I prefer the heavier bullets, and carry 230 grain in mine. My hairbrain idea is maybe the heavy bullet has slightly less muzzle flash, and, hey its a 45, bigger bullet is just.... bigger, right? |

Just curious, but why would you consider muzzle flash to be an issue w/ a CCW? If you had to use it, it seems to me that you'd be in such close contact that muzzle flash should be the last thing your adversary saw anyway.... fwiw - i use both 200GR+P and 230GR HydraShocks. equally deadly i think |

I believe in a plastic frame the 200+P grain would be best, in an all metal frame the 230 grain is my choice.

I've got some Speer Gold Dot 185's loaded to 1125fps that function perfectly from my S&W 1911. The rounds were made by the local Georgia Arms. You can tell from shooting them that they are very energetic.
If that's not enough, I've got some .41 Mag 220 grain at 1350 fps for a Taurus revolver. Then there's the Thompson Contender but that's in a different class. This barrel (I have several and you can swap them out in a couple of minutes) is a 30-30 necked down to 7 mm and the case fire-formed forward to increase powder capacity by about 10%. http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x.../contender.jpg |
